1. Proudest accomplishment at Black Bolt?
My proudest accomplishment so far at BB is that I have managed to really stick to a discipline to show up as often as possible. In the 503 days since I joined, I have been to BB 168 times, or on average every 3 days. With vacations, work travel, and other complications, I’m pretty proud of that. And yes I have a spreadsheet tracking every workout, doesn’t everyone?
2. When did you first start doing CrossFit?
About a month after I realized that my wife was getting in better shape than me. I’m competitive that way :) April 19, 2017 was my first fundamentals class. It was 74 degrees outside, I had slept 7h30m, and I for breakfast I had … haha, just kidding, I don’t track that much info :)
3. How did you find Black Bolt? Why do you train?
As with most of the best things in my life, my wife introduced me to BB. She started about 6 months before me. I asked her for 5 months to sign me up, and she finally did. Why do I train? For a beach bod, yo. Ha, no … I’ve been pretty active but not athletic my whole life, but I can only build so many garages and other projects, so it was time to get into something more structured.
4. What is your Favorite and least favorite movement?
Favorite - I’m really into Power Cleans of all forms right now, the movement is getting more fluid for me. I’m not going to say “least favorite” because that will get into my head. But “things I am working to enjoy more” would be bar facing burpees, 20s max assault bike, and reverse rack lunges. Used to be wallballs, but doing Karen 4 times in a year has me liking those now!
5. Do you follow a specific diet plan? Favorite Cheat meal:)?
On my own plan with cues from Paleo and Keto - lots of lean meats, veggies, nuts, and some dairy, limited carbs, virtually NO sweets or sugar. I do count macros on occasion to be sure I’m not way off base. Due to a weird allergy I have had for 15 years (Alpha-Gal, go google it) I don’t eat red meats. So lots of chicken, turkey, and fish. Besides eating to be healthy, I also limit carbs during the day because I’m a Hop Head, and I try to enough carb macros available for an IPA or two at night. IPAs are my “cheat meal”.
6. What is your daily motivation to workout?
To get swole. Or should I get jacked? Or shredded? I can’t keep up with all the lingo Hahaha, just kidding. I started because I know regular exercise solves lots of problems -- sleep, mood, happiness, how delicious food tastes :) That’s all still true, but an additional motivation now that I have learned more is the absolutely amazing effects that strength training have on things like bone health, HGH levels, and organ/cell health. I want to be sure that my limited time on this planet is as enjoyable as possible, and it sounds like strength training is the literal fountain of youth to enable that.
7. One thing you have done at Black Bolt that you NEVER that you would do?
Before I started at BB, there are lots of things that I never thought I would have to do, like burpees or pushing a sled around :) But the one thing that I got recently that I was really nervous about was kicking up to a handstand. I haven’t spent a lot of time upside down (ever) so that was big for me. Thanks a lot to Coach Sam for walking me through that, made it really simple.
8. One song that gets you hype up during a WOD!?
If I have to pick ONE song, it would have to be Around the World / Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger by Daft Punk. Really anything by Daft Punk is great to work out to. But I am also as child of the 80’s and 90’s so I love hearing fast paced songs from bands like Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, Stone Temple Pilots.
9. Tell us something about yourself that we don’t already know.
With the constant QOD’s I think everyone knows everything! OK y’all know I’m a car nut / gearhead. Let me dig up another spreadsheet… In the last 30 years I have owned 55 cars. Over half (27) of them Honda/Acuras, then 13 BMWs, 3 Subarus, and all other brands have been 1’s or 2’s, Never owned a Toyota or a Ford for some reason. Yes I have a problem! :)
