1. What brought you to CrossFit?
I had read a lot about how lifting weights increases bone density, and since I am well into my 5th decade I was searching for a fitness regimen that incorporated lifting weights as well as some cardio for the heart. I was also looking for more individualized instruction, and a workout that was fun that I would stick with. CrossFit at Black Bolt definitely checked all of those boxes!
2. What was your first impression?
To be honest I was kind of scared to start CrossFit. My initial impression was that it was only for athletes, weight lifters, or for people who were in really good shape, and I was none of those. It didn't take me long to realize that crossfitters come in all shapes and sizes and many levels of fitness. Most everyone is just trying to get and stay fit and strong:)
3. What’s been your biggest accomplishment?
There have been so many accomplishments for me in CrossFit. One is that at age 54 I'm in the best physical shape of my life! I also really like the feeling of finishing a tough WOD or attempting a heavy lift, and knowing I gave it my best effort. I am becoming mentally stronger too which I think is even more important.
4. What are you working on now?
At this point I am trying to work on my mental toughness. So much of CrossFit is a battle with your mind. I'm trying to embrace the moves and lifts that I'm bad at (to paraphrase Coach Zach) and working on ways to keep moving when I feel like quitting!
5. What’s your favorite Black Bolt CrossFit memory?!
There is something very empowering about lifting heavy weights! It feels great to feel strong. One of my best memories at Black Bolt is when I Power Cleaned 90lbs! It was a #PR, and that was awesome, but the best part was that everyone in the gym that day was just as excited for me as I was--and that's really what makes Black Bolt a special place:)
