1. What brought you to CrossFit?
My boys were playing ice hockey at a high level and needed a summer workout program. Dr. Jason Williams introduced me to OB and said he played hockey so would know what the boys needed to train specifically for their sport. The boys and I met OB at the gym when he was drilling the rig in preparing for the gym to open and he shared with the boys what he could do for them...they were all in! For two weeks I drove the boys to Black Bolt every day and sat in the lobby and worked while they trained. Everyday OB would come over and ask why I was not participating. My response was always the same, I'm an overweight mom who is way too old to start a strenuous workout routine at this point in my life...there is no way I could do CrossFit! I had convinced myself that I was exactly where I was supposed to be in life, a good wife, a good mom, dedicated real estate agent and overweight...no time or energy to take care of myself and I thought this was 'normal'. After hearing the same thing every day, OB basically challenged me and essentially told me to show up the next day ready to work out and he was not taking no for an answer. Somehow OB had figured out that while I was overweight and inactive, I still had a very strong competitive spirit and when that was challenged, I took action. I showed up and darn nearly threw up that first day while trying to back squat with a baby bar but I did it, and came back the next day and the next and now I am the one who is completely addicted to CrossFit :)
2. What was your first impression?
Having no knowledge of CrossFit nor ever being a member of a gym, I had no idea what to expect. My first impression was excitement that OB knew what the boys needed to make them better hockey players and was genuinely excited about training them. When that turned into training me, I was and remain so grateful and thankful that OB takes the time to make sure I am doing every move correctly so I don't get hurt. For having no experience in personal training or gym communities, I am blessed for this to be my first experience and believe that nothing else would compare to Black Bolt!
3. What’s been your biggest accomplishment?
There have been so many over the last 2.5 years it's hard to pick just one! Some days my biggest accomplishment is that I completed the workout and lived to tell about it! I would say that what I am most proud of however is that over this timeframe I have not sustained any injury and injuries that I walked in with have greatly improved. When I first shared I had started CrossFit everyone's first comment was you will get hurt. It pleases me now to tell those same folks that I have not sustained injury...I've just gotten into the best shape of my life and feel strong!
4. What are you working on now?
Lots of little things to make my lifting better, increase my strength and improve my cardio stamina...and breathing, always working on breathing, especially during cardio.
5. What’s your favorite Black Bolt CrossFit memory?!
Again, so many amazing memories come to mind. I love that we were there in the beginning of the gym starting because I know how hard OB has worked to make Black Bolt an amazing place for all of us and to see his success gives me a little bit of a proud momma moment. I loved that first summer when it was OB and Brett training the boys and I at 6am(the original chalk sniffers) and now love that we have grown and all of the amazing people I have met. I love that no matter what time of day I go to class I get to see folks who are genuinely excited to see me and who I am genuinely excited to see and catch up on their lives.
Everyday I feel blessed and am forever grateful to Dr. Jason for the introduction to OB and to OB who pushed me into this adventure...that introduction literally changed the course of my life and now instead of facing my half century mark overweight and looking to big pharma to help me feel better, I face 50 and the years to follow with confidence and feeling strong!
