1. What brought you to CrossFit?

As I tell most people, I was in shape.  Round is a shape. I got tired of being round.  I was 270lbs and not liking the way I felt. I started trying to find a place to workout.  During my search, I realized most places are just that, someplace to workout. You have to have a workout figured out before you go and then figure out how to accomplish it with what is available and hope you are doing it correctly.  While I was researching places, I saw some posts from my friends about CrossFit. It looked interesting, so I started talking to one of my friend at work about her experience with CrossFit. Hearing her describe it and the enthusiasm she has for it, got me more interested.  She was going to a place on the other side of Cary. I told her I wanted something closer to my house. She asked her coaches and they suggested Black Bolt!

2. What was your first impression?

Talking with Coach Jason that first day, I could see that he is very passionate about CrossFit and Black Bolt.  He really emphasized the importance of form and technique over heavy weights. He explained the CrossFit concept to me.  Learning that the class times and the workout of the day are preset, that everyone does the same workout by scaling it to what you can do with proper form and technique, made CrossFit even more appealing to me.  When I started the trial sessions, Coach Sam and Coach Jason were right there explaining every movement. They were energetic, knowledgeable, and supportive. They tailored all the movements based on my ability. This hasn't changed since day one.  They are always walking around to instruct, correct, and adjust what each person is doing so they do it properly and not get injured. During the every class, everyone is very supportive, not just the coaches. The main thing is just showing up and getting started!

3. What’s been your biggest accomplishment?

My biggest accomplishment so far has been losing some of the weight (currently at 253 lbs), trimming down, toning up and feeling better about myself! The next biggest accomplishment has been sticking with it. CrossFit at Black Bolt is always different and challenging. It keeps me interested and coming back for more!

4. What are you working on now?

Right now I am working on my flexibility.  The more flexible I get, the better form I have for the different movements, the more benefit I can get from that movement.  I'm making progress and that's the important part.

5. What’s your favorite Black Bolt CrossFit memory?

My favorite Black Bolt memory, so far (I'm sure there will be many more), was participating in the CrossFit Open! Even though I had only been doing CrossFit for 2+ months, it showed me what I was capable of with the right training, support, and right frame of mind.  It gave me a starting baseline to compare my progress going forward. It was motivating to be able to support and cheer on the other members while they were competing and then having them encourage me during my challenges. It has given me the attitude to ignore the negativity in my head and try.  It can only make me better :)
